A 10 year old Speaks about Life Below is a speech given by Madeleine, (10 year old Canadian Enlightened One), to her classmates: "You don't have to be a famous celebrity to make a difference to a child in South Africa. Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Oprah and Madonna have made news recently for their efforts to help orphan's in underprivileged countries. They are famous people and have lots of money and it is good that they are helping children. But you don't need money and fame to help orphaned children. You just need to care and want to help others. It is hard for us here safe in Canada with food, shelter and clothing to understand what is happening to other children on the other side of the world. But the truth is that hundreds of thousands of children are dying of AIDS in South Africa. It is so horrific that in some parts of South Africa there are so many children dying that they are not even counting them anymore. In South Africa, nearly 7 million men, women and children between 15 and 49 years old have AIDS. It is not unusual to see 8 and 9-year-old's, children younger than us, being heads of families. Imagine being 8 or 9 years old and dying of AIDS yourself, yet you cannot rest because you are responsible for providing the food, shelter and clothing for 3 or 4 younger brothers and sisters. (At this point, she points to the picture of the four children on the website and describes the picture) It is winter and only the youngest has a coat. Only two of the children have shoes. Their parents were going to get papers for them to go to school but they died of AIDS before they could get them. (She points to the other picture of their tin shack home) The 11 year old is the head of the family. This is their home. It has no floor, running water or electricity.
Many AIDS orphans have never received a teddy bear in their lives. Many AIDS orphans lay alone at night in their own pain. However, the joy that the comfort of a human touch and a teddy bear brings to the life of an AIDS orphans can be seen in their faces. (She points to the children's smiling faces.)
The teddy bears provide some comfort for the children as they die alone. And so it was the teacher cried and through her tears told the class that in all her years of teaching, this was the first time she had ever cried during a student's speech.
